Video Game Obsessions

If you have been reading my blog or simply look at the last few articles I have posted you can easily figure out what I am playing right now, GTA V/GTA Online. For a solid month I have been playing this game every day and at every chance I can get.

I cruised through the story finishing up just in time for GTA Online to launch and then the game just wouldn’t let go. As I have posted earlier the game has its hooks in me and I love it. It’s been years since I have been this obsessed with a video game.

All I can think about at work is getting back and grinding out ”ranks” with my friends, going on killing sprees and unlocking that next weapon mod. The game is constantly on my brain and I am craving more. I tried to think back to the last game that had this much of a hold on me and the earliest I could think of was Skyrim.

I pretty big obsession with Skyrim, but that obsession doesn’t compare to GTA V. I have skipped kickball games and billiard leagues because all I want to do is play this game. I took a day off work so that I could do nothing but play and not be disturbed. I had to take my girlfriend out to dinner just to make up for the fact that for the last month all I have done is play GTA V.

The obsession over GTA V got me thinking about what game I was the most obsessed with in my life time and I came up with three. Here they are in rank of least obsessed to most obsessed.

3) Starcraft: There was a year in middle school where I played the original Starcraft online every night from the moment I got out of school to the moment I went to bed. I was in a clan and I was good. I would play online against people keep upping my wins and occasionally playing custom maps.

2) World of Warcraft: I am sure this is number one for a lot of gamer’s out there. The mixture of social and loot was too much of a draw for me. I spent weekends doing nothing but leveling, running dungeons and raiding. I got so obsessed that I decided to run my own guild and would play almost every night until at least 3 AM.

1) The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time: By far the one game that I obsessed the most over in my entire life. In fact this was the game that got the “one hour of gaming a day” rule instituted in my house. I was so obsessed with playing this game that I got a call from my best friend in elementary school on a Saturday during the spring inviting me to come play hockey and I turned them down in front of my dad just so I could play more. Well my parents had seen enough and they knew that something had to be done, so the next day I got hit with the “Tate from now on you are only allowed to play video games for one hour a day”. Ouch!

What about you? Are you obsessed with GTA Online? What are the games that you were the most obsessed about in your life time? Did you have a similar rule in your house growing up? Let me know in the comments below I am interested and would love to hear people’s stories.
