Tips to Not Suck at Evolve

Last Friday night I finally decided to throw my copy of Evolve into my PS4 and ventured forth to the planet of Shear for some good old fashion monster hunting. Now I must admit I was a little nervous at first, Evolve is a game that requires coordination and teamwork and personally I hate to let my team down.

So after doing some research and goofing around in single player mode I finally dove right into battle. Well I threw my friend into battle and I watched… at first. Let’s be honest I am not that brave.

It took my buddy and I a few matches to get our feet wet and to understand all the craziness that was going, but after a good hour of play we were tracking the beast like pros and hunting down hunters with precision.

My buddy and I spent all Friday night jumping from match to match and after spending 8 hours on Friday and close to 3 on Saturday, alone, I have to say… a lot of people still don’t understand how to play this game.

That’s why I am here with some tips that will help you enjoy Evolve more and not irritate the crap out of your teammates.

Watch those damn videos:

Evolve does one of the best jobs of any game in recent memory with explaining itself, unfortunately you have to actually go out of your way to watch these in-depth videos.

Hidden in the “Extras” section of the game is a video gallery. Within this little treasure cove are videos that explain the abilities of ever hunter and monster in the game.  That’s not all though, the game takes it a step further and adds a second video for each hunter and monster explaining strategy and providing hints on how best to play that hunter/monster.

These videos will help you tremendously. Stop running into matches blind and take the time to learn the hunter/monster. The videos are roughly 2 minutes long and you will leave with so much knowledge. It’s like going to college for Evolve. Go get your diploma!

Need more incentive? You even get a trophy/achievement for watching the videos. They couldn’t make it any easier/rewarding for you.

STOP lone wolfing as a hunter:

This isn’t Call of Duty, this isn’t Call of Duty, seriously this isn’t Call of Duty!  Did you get that?

This is the number one tip that I can provide. Follow and stick with your teammates.

As a hunter you will never be able to take down the monster on your own, even at stage 1. If you decide to be some macho badass that doesn’t need their team then you are destined to lose and most likely destined to be spectating for the majority of the fight.

Not only can you not take on the monster by yourself, but the maps are riddled with wildlife that will grab you and slowly kill you. When this happens the only way to escape is by having one of your teammates free you.

There really is no benefit to lone wolf in Evolve, learn to be a team player and love your teammates. Every hunter brings something to the table and you will need all four of you together to take the monster down.

Help revived and trapped hunter

As the hunters it is necessary to have all four of you in order to take down the monster, having just one player die puts your team at a serious disadvantage, especially if that member is the trapper or medic.

Having one of your teammates die not to the monster is wasted damage or heals, so if one of your teammates is trapped by a plant or wildlife stop and help them out. This is even true if you are chasing the monster. It’s more important to keep your team alive and together than it is to get that few extra shots off on the monster.

If you are the trapper choose Maggie!

Maggie rocks, well more accurately Daisy is amazing.

Daisy is Maggie’s pet Trapjaw that will continuously track the monster and can help to revive fallen teammates. Essentially having Daisy on your team is like having a smart A.I. 5th member of your team, why do you pass that up? Short answer, you don’t!

Currently the other two trappers, Griffin and Abe, tracking abilities are weak and unreliable. Plus Daisy is just too amazing to have sitting on the sideline. I fully expect a patch to either buff Griffin and Abe or nerf Daisy, but for now there is no point in not playing as Maggie and bringing the amazing Daisy along for the hunt.

Follow Daisy

If the trapper on your team is Maggie, and as I mentioned above you really hope they are. Then follow Daisy. Thanks to her awesomeness Daisy will continuously track the monster and can lead you to it quickly, and catching the monster quickly is a huge advantage to your team.

Let’s say for some reason your trapper isn’t Maggie. Then hopefully they know how to track the monster, because the trapper needs to be either the first to the monster or right behind everyone else so they can throw down the mobile arena in order to trap the monster.

If you are the trapper stay back during the fight and run with the mobile arena in hand

The mobile arena takes a second to pull out and activate, it is always best to run with the mobile arena ready to throw. When chasing a monster every second counts and those 2 seconds it takes to switch between your gun and the arena are oh so precious.

Once you have thrown the arena down stay back. If you go down the arena goes down. The monster knows this and you are most likely their first target, especially if you trapped an early stage monster. Force them to chase you.

High on a cliff is a great place, and make sure if you are Maggie (which you should be!) to throw down harpoon traps to make it even more difficult for the monster to get to you. It is much more important for you to stay alive than it is for you to deal damage, so stay the F back.

Medics stay back too

The monster’s first targets are going to be the Medic or the Trapper. Stay on a high cliff above the fight and force the monster to climb to you. Every moment spent chasing you is extra time for the others to deal damage to the monster unhindered.

Level hunters and monsters up in single player

It’s so much faster and opens the game up to you, but also allows you to practice with hunters you don’t know without irritating your teammates. This is especially true if you are the medic, which leads me to..

Don’t be Lazarus unless you know what you’re doing

Of the three medics in Evolve Lazarus brings the least to the table in terms of healing. Don’t get me wrong he can be very valuable if you know how to play him but if you have no clue what you are doing then you are basically handicapping your team.

The medic is arguably the most important role in the game and if you have no clue how to play Lazarus you are just setting your team up to fail. Practice with him offline, if you are trying to unlock Caira or get a better understanding of how he works.

Know when to run away

I can’t count the number of times I screamed at the T.V. “you can’t take him on your own just run away”. If all your team is down, the monster is not close to dead and especially if you are the medic. Runaway! Wait the 2 minutes for your team to respawn, regroup and try again.

If you are the monster and it’s not looking good, get out of there. You are extremely faster than the hunters and can easily lose them. Find a place to hide, eat some more wildlife and fight another day.

Sneak is your friend

Sneaking won’t put down footprints or startle birds as pass by them. The hunters are practically helpless as you sneak, which gives you a good amount of time to hunt and evolve. Of course there are times where running is the best option, but when you are a safe distance away learn to be berry berry sneaky!

Book it at the beginning as the monster

You should be sneaking most of the time as the monster, but at the beginning you need to get as far away from the drop point as possible. Force the hunters to travel up mountains and through caves in order to track you. Find the most annoying path to travel and make it worse. I mean these guys want to kill you, don’t make easy on them!

Sniff A LOT

There is no limit to sniffing and the ability gives you invaluable information, such as the location of wildlife and the hunters. Remember to watch your back and be aware while you are eating. It’s terrible to get caught chowing down on lunch and have all four hunters show up.

Take out lone wolves:

Even at Stage 1 you can dominate a hunter that has decided to run away from the pack. I just told them not to do that… so punish them for it! Killing a hunter forces them to wait 2 min and if you managed to wipe out the medic and are stage 2 you basically have the win wrapped up. Show them whose boss and enjoy the thought of them raging at that 2 min wait.

Just keep beating the downed player, especially medics and trappers

If you manage to down a player stay on top of them until the red skull is completely gone. You are strong enough to take a beating to make sure the medic or trapper is completely out of the fight. This will severely swing the fight in your favor.

Without a medic hunters go down easily and without a trapper you can escape with ease.

Evolve is one of the most enjoyable and rewarding online games to have been released in a long time if your team works together or if you are smart as the monster. Otherwise it can just be an irritating experience. So follow the tips I just provided you and start winning matches and dominating hunters and monsters.

I’ll see you online, happy hunting!
