I am not a fan boy. In fact I strongly believe that life is way too short and there are too many good video games out there to be a fan boy, you just miss out on so much! With that said, my bank account isn’t flushed with cash. So when the current generation of video game consoles came out I sadly was forced to make a decision: PlayStation 4 or Xbox One (Sorry Wii U. No hard feelings! Much love!).
After weighting the options and continuously flip-flopping I finally decided to purchase the PS4 and I must say I have loved every second of it. Of course sadly only owning a PS4 does come with some disadvantages, such as being forced to miss out on Xbox One exclusives.
So far in this generation of consoles all games that have peaked my interest thankfully have either been a PS4 exclusive or released on both Xbone and PS4, but with next week’s release of Sunset Overdrive comes the first game of this console generation that is out of my gaming reach that I really want.
For those of you that haven’t been following this interesting title let me give you the skinny. Sunset Overdrive takes place in 2027 in the factitious American city of Sunset City. The evil corporation FizzCo has released their new energy drink and wouldn’t you know it the stuff turns people into mutant zombie like creatures.
The game is a third person shooter with a cartoony look and presentation, with gameplay that has been described as Tony Hawk with guns… Awesome! Words can’t do it justice so check out the launch trailer below.
Insomniac Games is the studio that is bringing you this little bundle of joy. Yep that’s the same studio that brought you the Ratchet and Clank series as well as the Resistance series (both PlayStation exclusives bee-tee-dubbs).
From what I have seen the game has a great sense of humor with a cartoon movie type presentation. Characters seem to constantly break the fourth wall and the previews and trailers have made me actually laugh out loud multiple times, an impressive feat if you are to ask my girlfriend.
Overall the game just looks fun. It looks like the type of game that I could pop in sit back grab an energy drink (see what I did there?) and just have stupid fun for hours, my kind of game.
I want to create a character in Sunset City with the crazy customization options and grind around shooting hilariously awesome guns at mutant zombies, but unfortunately I can’t since it’s an Xbox One exclusive.
This isn’t a rant against exclusivity deals. Sure, as a consumer I hate them. Why wouldn’t I want to be able to play every video game? But as a semi-smart individual that kind of understands business I understand the tactics behind them. In fact Sunset Overdrive is doing exactly what Microsoft had hoped it would, making me want an Xbox One so I can buy this game!
With Sunset Overdrive Microsoft has landed the first exclusive temptation (at least for me). Good for them and the gamers that own Xbox One’s. This game looks like an amazingly fun gaming experience. But damn it! I want it!
